Modernism in Metroland – Illustrated Talk by Alison Bailey

29 September, 2023 at 10:00 am until 12:00 pm

£10 Adult SORRY THIS EVENT IS NOW FULLY BOOKED.

Sir John Betjeman commented in his 1973 documentary Metro-Land: “All Buckinghamshire was scandalised by the appearance, high above Amersham, of a concrete house in the shape of a letter ‘Y’. It was built for a young professor by a young architect . . . ‘I am the home of the 20th century family’, it proclaimed, ‘that loves air and sun and open country’. It started a style called ‘moderne’.”

In this talk, Alison Bailey looks at the impact of High & Over and the ‘moderne style’, which we now know as modernism, on our local environment, particularly on the development of Amersham in the 20th century and how it is still influencing what we build today.

Tea/coffee served for additional £2pp and ticket holders will have unlimited access to museum afterwards.

The ground floor of the museum is fully accessible to those in wheel-chairs. Access to the first floor is limited to only part of the museum, but information on exhibits is provided on the ground floor.
