Seasonal walks

Welcome to our Summer Walks collection

The routes on this page have been specially selected from Chiltern Society walks published on our own leaflets, on OS Maps, and on Visorando. They’ll take you to some of the Chilterns’ most loved and iconic seasonal highlights.

The Chiltern Society Walks Leaflets shown below are from our collection of more than 80, which are FREE for personal use and can be found here.

Across the Chilterns

A linear walk from Chesham to Wendover climbing to the top of the Chiltern escarpment with spectacular views over the Oxford plains from the top of Coombe Hill. The Chiltern Hills are the main point of interest – you walk up one side, to the shoulder, then back down to civilisation.

Lacey Green Route

A beautiful short walk with stunning views and quiet valleys. You can also visit one of the Society’s most important sites, Lacey Green Windmill.

Nettlebed Countryside Walk

This beautiful walk is centred on the historic Oxfordshire village of Nettlebed. It features two commons, a nature reserve and the wonderful Chiltern landscape of beech woodlands, chalk grassland and rich wildlife.

Ewelme and Swyncombe

Discover the distinguished history of Ewelme, visit its watercress beds, and take in the exhilarating views over Oxfordshire from an old hillfort on Swyncombe Downs. At the right time of year you will see a wonderful display of snowdrops and aconites at St Botolph’s Church in Swyncombe.

Marsworth Canals and Reservoirs

This walk is good for both ‘Arms’ and legs. Not only that, what better way to get some fresh air into your lungs than to explore the waterways near Tring? The route includes a visit to one of the best birdwatching sites in the area, Wilstone Reservoir.

Sundon Hills and Sharpenhoe Clappers

A walk that’s attractive at any time of year. The route is quiet and peaceful, with magnificent views looking north into Bedfordshire and beyond. Visit the Iron Age hillfort at Sharpenhoe Clappers.

Wendover Woods and Cobblers Pits

This very varied walk takes in lovely woods, a hillfort, beautiful views over Aylesbury Vale and the peaceful Wendover Arm of the Grand Union Canal. In June you can experience one of the best displays of orchids anywhere in the Chilterns.

Brush Hill and the Ridgeway

This walk explores two Chiltern Society-run nature reserves, a very scenic stretch of the Ridgeway and woods blanketed with bluebells in the spring. There are fine views over Chequers, the Prime Minister’s country retreat.

Marlow Common Walk

A beautiful walk through the beech woods of Marlow Common and the Chiltern Society’s nature reserve. Look out for bluebells in the spring, orchids in early summer, and deer and red kites all year round.
