A group of local environmentalists have formed a company, Misbourne Environmental Protection Ltd with a view to challenge the Environmental Agency’s decision to approve the commencement of tunnelling through the Mid-Chilterns Aquifer, which supplies water to the residents of the Misbourne Valley and a large part of London.
Their particular concerns relate to
- The risk of losing the River Misbourne from tunnelling underneath it at Chalfont St Giles and Little Missenden
- The risk of changing the flow of water through the aquifer with the blocking of faults and fissures
- The use of bentonite in the tunnel grout and used for the construction of the vent shafts. Bentonite can be harmful through turbidity and in water.
