Captain’s Wood

Captain’s Wood is an ancient beech woodland and as such it forms a valuable part of the Chilterns landscape. 

Located on the edge of Chesham its towering beech trees, sunny glades and fantastic views across the surrounding countryside make this a fantastic place for visitors to enjoy the wildlife on their doorstep. There is plenty of interest throughout the year from bluebells and wood anemones in the spring to wonderful displays of autumn colour.

Large parts of the woodland have been overtaken by holly and a committed team of Chiltern Society volunteers have been working hard to reduce its dominance to encourage a more diverse woodland ecology.

Orienteering at Captain’s Wood

Orienteering is a fun and active way to explore the Chilterns countryside and we have a permanent course at Captain’s Wood suitable for beginners. The aim is to navigate in sequence between control points marked on the map and decide the best route to complete the course in the quickest time. It does not matter how young, old or fit you are, as you can run, walk or jog the course and progress at your own pace.
