Welcome to the Chiltern Society

The local charity made up of people like you

Whether you have met our volunteers clearing footpaths, attended one of our talks about tackling the pressures on the landscape, or spent time at one of our nature reserves – we share your passion for protecting Chiltern’s nature and character.

The Chilterns is home to globally scare chalk streams and historic market towns; to green and blue spaces that could help tackle the climate crisis; and to nature that nourishes our wellbeing. Local people like you – our thousands of supporters, and hundreds of volunteers – are coming together to secure a bright future for this incredible place. Last year:

We are taking positive action for the Chiltern’s environment by:

  • Helping to maintain and restore the 2,200 miles of paths and bridleways that crisscross the Chilterns
  • Working on the ground in the area’s green and blue places managing woodland, clearing streams, and creating homes for wildlife
  • Fighting the worst excesses of building and infrastructure projects and champion the best of sustainable development
  • Promoting the heritage of the Chilterns through our annual Heritage Festival, and offer hundreds of walks, cycle rides and events throughout the year.

Now you can make a difference

Volunteer with us

We have over 900 volunteer roles helping to keep the Chilterns special. From maintaining nature reserves and footpaths to demanding the best for biodiversity in housing projects, our volunteers are at the heart of how we do things differently.
