Chesham in Bloom – Volunteers needed

Did you know that 30 sites around the centre of Chesham are maintained by eight volunteers from Chesham in Bloom? Some of these are areas that the council used to maintain but because of cut-backs welcomed the arrival of the small group of hard-working volunteers. Some beds are privately owned such as the one outside the Waitrose store which has been completely renovated and replanted.

The Stumpery in Bellingdon Road, next to the youth club, was started many years ago and has grown to a quite impressive display in woodland – hence the name. A sizeable area has just been planted up and will be viewed by the Royal Horticultural Society judges on their tour in July.

Some such as the Coronation bed in Red Lion Street and the circular beds on White Hill are council owned. Last year people will remember the crown planted to commemorate the coronation of King Charles. This year we are linking up with Chesham’s twinning partners Friedrichsdorf and Houilles with a design highlighting the three emblems that feature in their coats of arms – the Swan for Chesham, the Falcon for Houilles, France and the Rose for Friedrichsdorf, Germany.

They make a significant difference to the appearance of the town- we hope improves people’s sense of well being.

Continuing throughout the year, the Tuesday 2hr working parties draw many compliments from passing residents. The new bed at the entrance to the town centre on council-owned land has already proven very popular and will be an important addition to the judges’ route.

Chesham in Bloom is part of the RHS run Britain in Bloom. Every year judges tour the town with the team and mark them on horticulture, environment and community.

But before that a lot of work has to be carried out and that is where you come in. If you’ve ever thought you’d like to get involved but don’t really know how, just contact Colette Littley at the town hall on 01494 774842 and she will point you in the right direction or complete the form below and we will be in touch. If you’re a knowledgeable gardener – great but if you’re just keen to help we need you too.
