When the construction of HS2 is fully underway in the Chilterns there will be major construction camps throughout the area and tens of thousands of construction lorry journeys for several years.
The extra traffic will have a significant impact on local roads, particularly key junctions and roundabouts. There are real concerns about the impact on emergency vehicles, school and rush-hour traffic and funeral corteges.
Various traffic mitigation proposals are constantly under review and at the centre of debate. HS2 Ltd has offered a road safety fund for communities affected by the scheme, and the Government has offered a multi-million pound package to improve road links disrupted by the construction which at least one MP has dismissed as inadequate.
The Society will work with local communities, other Chiltern-based groups and the authorities to do all it can to ensure our communities and motorists do not suffer unnecessary disruption and delay. We are going to need eyes and ears on the ground to keep us informed.
