The Chesham Mayoral Awards – Well done Captain’s Wood Volunteers Team

I am thrilled to announce that our Captain’s Wood Volunteer Team, have been nominated for the Volunteer Team of 2020/21 Award under the Chesham Mayoral Awards scheme. It is a tribute for all the hard work they have put into getting Captain’s Wood back into a great recreational space for local residents whilst still maintaining its status as a local nature reserve.

The Chesham Mayoral Awards were established in 2005 to celebrate community heroes and brilliant businesses. The Volunteer Team Award is the newest of the awards, having been started 3 years ago, to recognise the amazing work that volunteer teams and projects do across Chesham. Nominees have ranged from groups tackling food poverty, to charity shop teams and those who protect the environment.

The Captain’s Wood Volunteer team is a Chiltern Society volunteer group and has been operating in and around Chesham for the least 6 years. The Captain’s Wood team have made huge improvements to the Wood, a popular recreational space, and continue to receive positive comments and support from local residents. Not only is the wood much more user friendly and accessible for residents to enjoy, it is also a much more diverse habitat particularly for wildflowers, birds and invertebrates.

Whilst much of their work has been in Captain’s Wood, volunteers from the group have been great supporters of the town council’s work to increase the biodiversity in the town for the benefit of both wildlife and people living, working and visiting Chesham, including running its bird box scheme and supporting the Communi-Tree tree planting initiative.
