Great work on the River Chess by a dozen Chiltern Society Volunteers yesterday, as we took our first steps towards increasing the available habitat for water voles.
We were coppicing bankside trees to improve light levels reaching the channel which encourages the growth of the types of vegetation favoured by water voles. And all the material we gained has been set aside to be used in a channel restoration project, hopefully in the autumn.
Ultimately, we hope provide water voles with important food sources, sheltering opportunities and potential burrowing sites so the populations above and below Latimer Park Farm can connect and thrive.
More coppicing work next week – hopefully the sun will continue to shine.
