Photogroup’s Heraldry Presentation – Online
Event Navigation

The Chiltern Society’s Photogroup are delighted to invite you to John Hockey’s heraldry presentation on Saturday, 16 January 2021 at 10.30am via Zoom (the ‘virtual doors’ will open at 10.15am).
Covid-19 prevents us holding indoor meetings for the foreseeable future, so we have decided to meet online using Zoom.
John Hockey will give a presentation on heraldry, defined as a system of devising and regulating coats of arms and other armorial bearings. However, John describes heraldry as being, “Colourful, full of surprises, ‘secret’, amusing…and it’s everywhere.”
In describing its history, he explains why we say a ‘coat’ of arms. We also learn why the ancestors of the Dukes of Westminster bore some grudges about the subject. Many ancient churches include diamond-shaped funeral hatchments. John examines a “spectacular” example and what it reveals about who is commemorated and the landed family itself. Other topics include black-and-white substitutes for colour, the Order of the Garter, use of puns, the heraldry in Ashridge House (and garden) and lastly, examples of quirky heraldry.
You do not need to RSVP.
